A COOKING competition was held for scouts and guides last week.

Five teams from the 3rd Winchester (Worthies) Scout troop and six teams from the 1st Kings Worthy Guides and Rangers pitted their skills against each other at Camp Pinsent on Tuesday June 13.

The task was to create a two-course meal over a fire that they had built in a two hour period. Each patrol had to plan, purchase, prepare and cook themselves with no adult intervention.

Main menu choices ranged from veggie kebabs with rice to chicken wraps and pasta with vegetables. Puddings were also inventive with fruit cups drizzled with chocolate to apple strudel cooked in foil.

Twelve year old Girl Guide Lily Benwell said: "The experience was very fun and enjoyable and creating our own dishes was the best part because I love cooking."

Judging proceedings was local councillor Jackie Porter who had to sample 11 meals throughout the evening.

She also observed the competitors under each category of best teamwork, best presentation, best taste and lowest budget.

Guide leader Isabelle Haigh said: "This was a wonderful way to spend a Tuesday evening with 60 young people from our district. Their enthusiasm, teamwork and creativity was fantastic and they were a credit to scouting and guiding."

After the event, scout James Clifton said: "I enjoyed the evening. The competition was a bit of a challenge as we weren't the quickest to light the fire. However, the scouts still came through and beat the guides."
