A MAN has died following a major crash on the M3 near junction 10.

Emergency services were called to the collision on the M3 southbound by Bar End Winchester at 10.43am on Tuesday, May 16.

The crash involved a grey Mercedes Sprinter crashing into a broken-down HGV, police said in a statement today (Wednesday, May 17).
The driver of the Mercedes, a 38-year-old man from Walsall, in the west Midlands, was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been named.

The southbound carriageway was closed until around 8pm due to a complicated and difficult recovery from the incident following an initial police investigation.

The day-long closure of the M3 forced thousands of cars into Winchester both from the motorway and the A34, causing city-wide congestion.
