THE Liberal Democrats have increased their majority on Winchester City Council.
They increased the number of councillors by two to 30 whilst the Conservatives slipped from 13 to 12. Such figures have not been seen since the noughties when the late Rodney Sabine was the council leader. The Lib Dems now have two-thirds of the 45 seats on the council.
The Lib Dems made two gains from the Tories, in Upper Meon Valley and Bishop's Waltham.
The extent of the Conservatives losses has been masked by the fact that two of the seats which changed hands were technically 'independent' but held by councillors who had been members of the Tory group.
The Conservatives took back Denmead vacated by the Independent Judith Clementson. The victory was tarnished because Ms Clementson had previously been a Conservative.
The Green Party has managed to double the number of its members on the council, with Cllr Danny Lee being elected in Central Meon Valley in a seat vacated by the Independent former Tory Victoria Weston.
Speaking after the election, Cllr Caroline Horrill, leader of the Conservative Group, said that she was “disappointed that we didn’t gain any more seats on the council.”
She continued: “The fact that, obviously, there has been a national overlay of a lot of disappointment for the Conservatives, generally, and I think that’s had a huge effect here.”

Cllr Martin Tod told the Chronicle: “It’s always encouraging whenever you’re running a council and you win more seats; you’re holding the ones you have and you gain another two. Obviously, we’re delighted that local people have chosen to entrust us with running the council for at least another year.”
The current make-up of Winchester City Council is: Lib Dem – 30, up 2, Conservatives – 12, down one, Greens – two, up one, Independent – one, down two.
