WINCHESTER College has hosted a series of enrichment sessions on Shakespeare for pupils.
On Friday, April 28, pupils from Park Community School and Everest Community Academy visited the college for the sessions.
The visit began with a drama workshop in the Queen Elizabeth II theatre led by the English and Drama departments, where the children ran through scenes of MacBeth and discussed the themes and topics of the text.

Following the workshop was a lesson in the Treasury Museum, where the pupils examined a silver ewer and basin which was given to the college in 1563. They also examined Winchester College’s account book from 1563, which lists the food and drink consumed by the school community for that year including large quantities of grain, hops and malt for making bread and beer as well as various livestock for feasts.
The second half of the afternoon was spent with an edition of Shakespeare’s First Folio, as well as other work by his contemporaries.
To end the day, the pupils attended a lecture from Professor Emma Smith on the importance of the First Folio. She spoke about its significance in the evolution of English language, as well as our understanding of the playwright and his contemporaries.
