The Chapel of St Cross was the venue last Thursday (April 27) for a piano recital of works by Brahms and Chopin, in the Perfect Pitch lunchtime concert series.

Chenyu Wang from China, is a twenty year old third year student at The Royal Academy of Music in London and is the recipient of multiple prizes and scholarships.

Chenyu began with Capriccios Opus 76 Numbers 1 and 2 by Johannes Brahms. In these short pieces her virtuosity was immediately in evidence, brushing aside the high technical demands with ease, but highlighting the lyrical aspects as well.

Then to the major work in the programme – The Third Sonata Opus 58 in b minor by Frederic Chopin. This piece in four movements encompasses all the elements of Romantic piano writing – bravura – lyricism – passion and tenderness. Throughout her performance Chenyu showed an impressive command of the work, producing a wide range of colour and solo outlines to Chopin’s score. The largo slow movement was especially beautiful. This was a virtuoso performance for one so young.

The weekly series of concerts continues on Thursday May 4 at 12.30pm with a programme of accordian music performed by Volodymir Vasylenco from Ukraine. Admission is free.
