Winchester elections: Southwick & Wickham and St. Barnabas 

On May 4, residents will be able to vote for one candidate in 16 wards. Sitting councillors are marked with an *. 

We invited every candidate standing in the Winchester City Council local election to submit 100-word profiles. 

These are the candidates for Southwick & Wickham and also St Barnabas and their own words as to why they are standing. 

Southwick & Wickham 

Chris Chamberlain – Liberal Democrats 

Chris Chamberlain lives just outside of Wickham with his partner and nine-year-old son, and has lived locally for the majority of his life. Chris is heavily involved in the local community. He is the chair of a parish consultative forum and a regular contributor to his parish council. 

Chris works as a project director, running his own company delivering projects and programmes for central government. Chris is a sponsor for two Ukrainian refugees and can often be found walking the Meon Valley trail or South Downs Way with his dogs. 

Sandy Phillips-Lee – Conservative 

I live in Knowle and work part-time so I have time to be involved in community activities, including being an active member of Knowle Residents’ Association.

I also attend Wickham, Southwick, Newlands and Boarhunt full parish council meetings so that I can keep up to date with local issues across the ward.

I am used to public speaking and I am not shy to stand up for my beliefs and commitments.

It’s important we protect this wonderful area for ourselves and future generations and I pledge, if elected, to be the strong voice needed for our ward at Winchester City Council. 

Nigel Prior – Green 

I live in Wickham and have been a part of this community for nearly two decades.  I carry out several volunteer roles in south Hampshire and have done so for a decade or more. 

Until recently I have tried to stay apolitical.  However, the damage we as human beings have done to our one and only planet has drawn me towards environmental responsibility, equality, justice and solving the disgrace that has become of our vital public services due to continued underfunding. 

Building a safer environment for all is now my passion.  Reducing our environmental impact on the planet is now critical. 

Paul Sony – Labour

Paul has lived in Wickham for over seven years and works in Fareham.

Paul is a member of GMB Union where he is heavily involved in equalities.

He believes that people should be treated equally and not be discriminated against.

Paul believes in NHS services for all and that it should be kept in public ownership.

He believes it is vital that teachers are given resources to provide education of the quality that children deserve.

Private companies should not be running schools as a business. It is also vital that there are improved transport links locally so that people can get around more easily. 

St. Barnabas 

Lorraine Abraham – Green 

I have never stood as a candidate before, but I am inspired to do so now as I have seen the positive impact that Green Councillors across the country have made to the lives of people in their communities. 

Listening to people in Winchester, residents are keen to see local initiatives to reduce waste and encourage reuse. They want to see greater action to enable walking, cycling and viable public transport, and the roll-out of more affordable renewable energy. 

The Green Party can make a real change on these vital and urgent issues. 

David Crudgington – Conservative 

Born in Weeke Manor Estate. I have lived in Winchester all my life. 

I just want the opportunity to give back to my local community and give a commitment to serve and improve their experience of life in the St Barnabas ward. 

Together (if elected for the Conservatives) I aim to provide Winchester with affordable and reliable services. 

Future planning for Winchester is an essential objective and a strong truly local view point provides a conduit for Wintonian’s to shape their aspirations. 

Jonny Morris – Liberal Democrats 

Jonny has lived in Winchester for eight years, with his wife and young son. A keen runner, he can be spotted doing 5k around the footpaths of St Barnabas; he knows every tree root and every dodgy crossing. 

He’s volunteered at his local school and library, while his day job of 20 years is a freelance writer and drama producer. The only way you get to keep working in that sort of career is by getting stuff done on time, and not making promises you cannot keep. 

Lucy Sims – Labour 

Lucy has lived in St. Barnabas Ward in Winchester for seven years with her partner and two children who attend local schools.

She is a parent governor and recently became vice-chair. With an academic background in sociology and education, Lucy has worked on various projects as a research assistant, utilising her listening skills to gather data and share knowledge.

If elected as a city councillor she would put families and environmental issues at the heart of decision making.
