THE historical Watercress Line is hosting a royal celebration to mark the coronation.

Running from 1pm to 5pm, everybody will be invited to a relaxed afternoon of music and entertainment on Sunday, May 7. Taking place against the backdrop of Alresford Station, which will be decorated to go along with the proceedings, attendees will be able to bring a big picnic, their chairs, tables and bunting to celebrate the special day.

The Watercress Line will have a stately programme, including a trumpet fanfare on arrival and a visit from a specially dressed Coronation train.

Music from around the British Isles will be provided by Alder Valley Brass Band and 1940’s style singer Stephanie Belle. Winchester Morris Men will be dancing and singing, while local personality Paddy Roadnight will compere. There will also be an informal jamming session to round off the afternoon for any musicians who might like to join in.

Everyone is invited to bring their gazebos and dress them in grand royal style, with a prize available for the most regally adorned gazebo. There will also be a best-decorated cake competition and a prize for best-dressed individual.

With face painting, stalls including tombola and a raffle, hot and cold food, a wine bar and craft beer tent, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

The Watercress Line’s interim CEO Rebecca Dalley said: “We are so excited about our Royal Celebration event on Sunday, May 7 – there is no better way to commemorate the historic Coronation of King Charles than at our very British heritage railway in New Alresford.

Tickets need to be purchased in advance before Tuesday, May 2. Adult tickets cost £5, children aged between 5 and 16 cost £3 and those aged 4 and under will be able to get in for free. Gazebos are £10 extra per party.
