The Duke on the Test, near Romsey, has been going from strength to strength since it re-opened in July last year.
The pub dates back to 1583 when the first hostelry opened on the site.
It has been extensively refurbished and extended to include 12 en-suite bedrooms.
The food has been getting rave reviews, with head chef Vince Cundev getting high praise from Marco Pierre White, who has three Michelin stars, when he visited the establishment recently.
So I thought I would go and see for myself, on April 3.
It was a lovely, sunny day, but I decided to eat indoors despite the ample space outside, which would be the perfect spot for a drink on a warm, summer evening.

I was very impressed with the large selection of dishes on offer. From sandwiches to pub classics like fish and chips and The Duke’s Burger. They also have more modern dishes such as a Thai Red Fish Curry and a vegan version.
I went for the pie of the day which was chicken, bacon and leek. When it arrived, it was served with a generous portion of mash potato, carrots and green beans. It also comes with a small jug of gravy.
Cutting into the thick crust revealed the filling, which was full to the brim. The pieces of succulent chicken were sizeable, and were complimented very well by the bacon and leeks.
It was a very satisfying meal, one I can imagine having on a Sunday afternoon before going home for a nap.
I didn’t have any alcohol, but they did have an extensive wine list and a variety of gins and other spirits.
Then came the question of desert. I was very tempted by the treacle sponge with custard and the sticky toffee pudding. However, I decided to go with ice cream, specifically one scoop of caramel and pecan and another of raspberry sorbet. I noticed they also had an ice cream called black coconut. Apparently, this tasted like regular coconut, but gave you a black tongue.
Overall, it was a great experience. Perfect for a spot of lunch and a drink on a warm day.
