A ROMSEY woman has spoken of her anger over bus services being cancelled at short notice.

The 79-year-old woman, who asked to remain anonymous, had to walk 45 minutes home from Romsey Bus Station.

The woman was using the 66 Stagecoach service from Romsey to Winchester and had planned to get the 9.05am service home from the bus station, on March 24.

However, when she arrived, there was no sign of the bus. When she looked at the information board, to her dismay, it said that the 9.53am and 10.53am services had also been cancelled.

The next bus home would have left at 11.53am, meaning she would have had to wait for more than two and a half hours. She decided to walk home in the end, a distance of around one and a half miles, which took 45 minutes.

The woman said: “It's beyond a joke. There is no communication at all, I have given up now. Why are they doing this? We never know when they are going to be there.

“Just before Christmas, I came across a girl who looked distressed. She said she needed to go into Winchester to sit an important exam, and had no other way of getting there.

“I'm able to walk, but many people can't get about. People are having to find other ways of getting into town.”

On March 24 at 8.26am, a tweet from Stagecoach South said: “We are sorry to report that the 9.05 service 66, Winchester to Romsey and the 9.53 service 66 Romsey to Winchester will not be running. Our apologies, Ady.”

This comes after the 36 service from Lockerley to Romsey was cancelled at the end of March, with the county council saying that each trip was costing the taxpayer £50.

Stagecoach was asked for a comment.
