FILM students from the University of Winchester have been recruited by a new festival to help with promotions.

Four students attended the launch of Winchester Books Festival, to create a video for the inaugural event and gain some real-world experience.

The university is sponsoring the festival and hosting some of the talks from April 21 to 23 in addition to the launch on March 2 when tickets went live.

The video features speeches from co-founder Sian Searles, university head of external engagements and partnerships Natasha Montagu and authors taking part in the festival such as Rebecca Barclay and Claire Fuller.

Budding film and media students Isobel Hood, Jack Robinson, Becca Lane and Tammo Foad hope to continue the collaboration and cover some of the talks and workshops across the three-day festival.

Isobel, 22, said: “It was great working for books festival team and attending the launch event. We’re looking forward to the festival and seeing all the events. Having opportunities like this is really great for us as young filmmakers and we’re really grateful.”

Jack, 21, said: “I’m personally really proud to be working with the book festival team on this. It’s a fantastic event for the Winchester community and want to make more content for them in the future.”

The event and community interest company was founded by three friends, Sian Searles, Sophie Liardet and Louisa Symington, who felt there was a gap in Winchester’s calendar.

The founders said: “We are particularly grateful to the University of Winchester – academics and students - who are not only our main sponsors, but who have also been so generous with advice and practical help.

“This year it is a pilot festival but we very much hope that this will the first of many annual Winchester Books Festivals and events throughout the year, that will encourage a love of reading and books and support to authors established and debut."

Vice Chancellor Sarah Greer said: "We are delighted to be sponsoring the Winchester Books Festival, and helping both to celebrate our talented local authors and to welcome many other fantastic authors to the city.”

Tickets are being sold through Play to the Crowd. To see the full event listings or book go to winchesterbooksfestival.com/.
