An appreciative audience was treated to another stunning concert by the Kingsgate Voices who go from strength to strength under the guidance of their conductor Andrew Hayman.
They sang a programme comprising Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli the movements of which formed the backbone of the programme interspersed with other sacred music from Bruckner through to Elgar and Poulenc.
This relatively newly formed choir (2020) achieves remarkable performance levels. The reviewer is aware of Andrew Hayman’s no-nonsense, strict rehearsal regime of ‘no chat’ which bears fruit in the total concentration and taut realisation of the performance. The excellent blend of vocal parts, listening and fine-tuning are the results of ‘not breaking the spell.’
The concentration was palpable and thrilling, this choir thinks and breathes as one voice. Andrew Hayman’s deceptively low-key approach encourages and enables such a passionate performance from the choir. Through these singers, Andrew conveys his understanding of the music to the audience.

The Bruckner Ave Maria was ecstatic, bringing tears to the eyes. After the music soaring to great heights, the last gentle, exquisite chord was so beautifully tuned and nuanced that I held my breath. A choir that can sing like this is a gem indeed.
The organ and lute interludes were also well received, especially Andrew’s rendition of the fiery Bach Fugue in G minor, which was a triumph.
Congratulations to Kingsgate Voices. Keep up the good work. Your concerts are a highlight to look forward to.
The next Kingsgate Voices concert, Byrdsong, will take place on Saturday June 24, 7pm in St Paul’s Church Winchester.
