Sarum Road Hospital in Winchester has been recognised for its cancer services available at its Mulberry Cancer Centre.

This is the third time the hospital has received the award.

The Macmillan Quality Environmental Mark was set up in 2010, in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support and the Department of Health, to better meet the needs of patients living with cancer.

It recognises hospitals, hospices and support centres that go above and beyond in the way they design a cancer service that provides a welcoming and supportive environment.

The Mulberry Cancer Centre was first opened in 2015 and is the only dedicated private cancer centre in Winchester.

Four categories are evaluated before the award can be given. This includes how the clinical environment is designed, through to service experience and the patient voice.

Sarum Road Hospital’s Mulberry Cancer Centre achieved the highest score possible and was recognised as offering an excellent service to patients being treated for a range of cancers from across Hampshire.

Assessors took note of how staff at the hospital continually engaged with patients and their families and as a result directly adapted services and practices to meet the needs of the patients they were treating.

Rebecca Stedman Brown, oncology clinical services manager, said: “This award is a recognition of the contributions from the whole team – from oncology nurses and pharmacist to our housekeeping staff. The team worked tirelessly through Covid, ensuring that treatments were delivered without interruptions in the face of extraordinary challenges. The oncology team go above and beyond daily to deliver the care this award recognises.”

Richard Myers, director of clinical services at Sarum Road Hospital, said: “We are so proud to have been awarded the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark. It is testament to the incredible hard work and dedication of the oncology team and how the team regularly go above and beyond to ensure our patients receive the best care and treatment possible. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the patients in our care are always treated in a friendly and peaceful environment.”
