A BOMB that was dug up in a garden in Twyford has been blown up by bomb disposal officers.

The device was detonated safely by specialists from the Royal Logistics Corps after it was discovered by a local gardener.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at 2.06pm on Monday, January 30 after a suspected piece of unexploded ordnance was dug up in a garden on Church Lane, Twyford.

"Officers attended and a cordon was put in place as a safety precaution. 

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) attended and carried out a controlled explosion."

One resident told the Chronicle that the device had been found in the road and taken to a garden for it to be detonated.

The detonation occurred at approximately 7pm on Monday, January 30.

Following the detonation, Winchester Police said in a post on Facebook: “Just for the information of the residents of Compton and the surrounding villages, we wish to advise you that at approximately 7pm an ordinance device was detonated in the local area by EOD officers.

“It was discovered by a local gardener and then detonated promptly and safely by the relevant specially trained officers.

“Apologies for any noise disturbance.”

It is currently believed that there is no wider risk to the public.
