Winchester Radio is a finalist in the prestigious annual ‘National Hospital Radio Awards’.
Alan Dedicoat, patron of the national ‘Hospital Broadcasting Association’ revealed the nominees for the 2023 event.

All entries are judged by media professionals working in the broadcast industry, and senior managers working across the NHS.

Winchester Radio has been providing a service for patients at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital continuously for thirty-nine years, and has also, since 2019, been providing a community radio service for older people in Winchester and the surrounding villages on 94.7FM.

Anna O’Brien, chairman of Winchester Radio said: “We are thrilled to be nominated in these awards – all of our team delivering the service are volunteers, and we are passionate about supporting the patients, the hospital, and the wider Winchester community, including those in need and who are vulnerable; or those experiencing social isolation or illness.

“It is wonderful for our small, volunteer charity which has been supporting the community since 1984, to be recognised and appreciated for the work we do helping others and for raising awareness of the great initiatives that take place in and around Winchester to help keep people connected.”

The station is shortlisted in both the award categories it entered – ‘Best Speech Package’ and ‘Best Special Event’.

The first is for its coverage over the summer, of the ‘Winchester Paralympics Personal Bests’ annual event supporting those with learning disabilities, and the second nomination is for the ‘100 Years of Bus Services in Winchester’ – the celebratory, commemorative weekend marking the centenary of the first public bus services in Winchester.

Winchester Radio is one of over 160 independent hospital, health and wellbeing radio stations across the UK.

This year’s National Hospital Radio Awards will take place in Bolton in March as part of the Hospital Broadcasting Association’s annual national conference weekend. The awards ceremony will be on Saturday March 25, when all the winners will be announced.
