Winchester residents are being encouraged to apply for temporary road closures for King Charles III’s Coronation.

His Majesty’s Coronation will be held on Saturday May 6 with an extra bank holiday to mark the event, taking place on Monday May 8.

The deadline to apply for a road closure is February 3.

On Winchester City Council's website, it said: “Due to the significant number of submissions we’re expecting, applications for Coronation party road closures are invited to begin now and they need to be submitted at least 12 weeks in advance so we can be confident of getting the legal process completed in time for the event. Applications can still be submitted after this date, but we cannot guarantee we’ll be able to process them in time.”

Most temporary road closures will not need a licence but a charge of £1,700, introduced in 2020 for commercial event road closures, is required unless the application is made on behalf of a charity or non-profit-organisation.

The city council will need information from event organisers on how traffic will be managed. Also it is the organisers' responsibility to consider risk assessments and necessary arrangements to allow access to emergency services.

For those who do not want to apply for temporary road closures, the city council has also offered Winchester’s open spaces to celebrate King Charles’s Coronation.
