A NEW exhibition, featuring 35 watercolours and drawings from a school’s collection, will be on show for more than two months.

Winchester College is opening the free exhibition, titled Views of Nature, in the Treasury Museum from January 12 until March 31 with some of the artwork never having been seen before.

The display showcases a range of watercolours from a sixteenth-century view of fields near Basingstoke, one of the earliest representations of an identifiable English landscape, to works by some of the best-known British artists of the twentieth century.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Around five hundred works are in the collection, with the majority being donated to the school by former pupils.

Some of the works, which cover four centuries, have never been exhibited before. The college’s keeper of collections, Richard Foster, said: “Winchester’s watercolours and drawings are one of the great strengths of its collections. They have long been an important part of the artistic education of our pupils, and we are delighted to be able to share them with a wider audience.”

Hampshire Chronicle:

An illustrated catalogue of the exhibition, with essays about each of the pieces on display will available to purchase from the museum.

Schools in Hampshire are also able to visit the Treasury for free. To organise a school visit contact the museum manager at treasury@wincoll.ac.uk.

The exhibition will be open 2-4pm from Thursday, January 12 to March 31. The display is free to view and accessible through the Porters’ Lodge in College Street in Winchester.
