A UKULELE society has announced a new event for people in the area with Dementia.

Braishfield Ukulele Musical Society is holding a Dementia Sing Along on Monday, January 16.

Inspired by the recent BBC programme The Dementia Choir, the event will welcome those with dementia from the Romsey area to come along for a sing.

Society member Alan Lord explained: “We play to various places around the Hampshire area, we go to quite a few care homes and groups.

“But what we’ve found is, when we go into a care home with those with dementia, they immediately respond to the singing.

“And it’s wonderful to see, actually; we had one lady, whose husband hadn’t spoken in months, and then we did our songs and he must have recognised something in it and he started to respond to the songs which was great.

“So it really gives you a good feeling.

“When we saw the BBC thing, we thought it would be a good idea to do something in Braishfield for the surrounding areas, which include Romsey and Eastleigh, to invite them to come in with people with dementia or mental health issues along with their carers to come in and sing.”

The society will provide music and song sheets for attendees to follow, with songs that they will know and ones they will be able to join in with.

Attendees will be welcome to bring a partner, carer or friend with them, and don’t even need to be able to sing, just come along and have a nice time.

The first session will take place at All Saint’s Church Room, Braishfield, Romsey, between 2.30pm and 4pm, and if it proves to be popular will be repeated monthly.

The room has easy access with on-site parking, disabled toilet facilities and underfloor heating.
