GREAT shows are coming to Winchester in 2023 as the Theatre Royal announces its new year programme.
With a line-up featuring drama, dance, comedy, magic, music, circus acts, songs and more, the theatre promises to have something for everybody.
The season will begin with local theatre company Blue Apple taking to the stage with children’s adventure Lashings of Ginger Beer (January 6-8), followed by the Henry Beaumont School with Matilda the Musical JR. (January 17-19).

Blackeyed Theatre will present Teechers Leavers ’22 from February 2 to February 4, bringing terrifying teachers and hopeless pupils to life.
Meanwhile, SHE (February 21) charts the experiences of different women from childhood to old age across seven short plays with two actors performing over 14 characters.
In March, London Classic Theatre will perform Mike Leigh’s black comedy about 1970s British Life Abigail’s Party (March 1-4), while Rebecca Vaughan will bring her one-woman rendition of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own to the venue from March 16-18.
Big names in music will also be celebrated during the year, from Frankie Valli in Oh What a Night (January 20) to Freddie Mercury in Queen Rhapsody (January 22).

The Theatre Royal will also welcome a host of well-known comedians, including Hal Cruttenden (January 28), Danny Baker (February 09), and Best Newcomer nominee Maisie Adam (February 11).
Meanwhile, the Winchester Comedy Festival’s Spring Gala (March 10) will feature comedian/magician Pete Firman, BBC New Comedy Award finalist Sikisa, Sean McLoughlin – who recently supported Ricky Gervais – and observation comic Mike Cox as MC.

Dance enthusiasts will delight in Ballet UK’s production of the ever-enchanting Beauty and the Beast (January 10-11), which features a stunning classical score, new choreography, sets and costumes.
The company will return in April to perform its portrayal of one of the world’s greatest love stories, Romeo and Juliet.
TV presenter and podcaster Dan Snow will also be coming to the Theatre Royal on January 14 to discuss his career visiting historical battlefields and travelling the world, while international bestselling author Kate Mosse will visit Winchester on March 15 as part of her first-ever theatre tour.
General entertainment for all ages will include The Hat Fair Cabaret on January 15 and Michael Jordan’s High Jinx Magic & Illusion Family Show.
Children’s theatre will come in the form of Tall Stories’ Olivier Award-nominated adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s best-selling A Room on The Broom, which runs at the theatre from February 11-12.

Morgan & West will present Unbelievable Science on April 14, containing captivating chemistry, phenomenal physics, and bonkers biology for audiences aged from seven to 107.
The theatre has also programmed a number of shows that allows audiences to pick the price ticket which works best for them, and to encourage others to experience shows a little different.
Shows include The Hat Fair Cabaret, The Four Seasons (January 31), Dr Adam Perchard’s Bathtime for Britain (February 10), SHE, A Room of One’s Own and Tales from a Thousand and One Nights (April 11).
A livestream option is also now available so audiences can watch certain shows from the comfort of their own homes, starting with Blue Apple’s Lashings of Ginger Beer.
