I found myself quite suddenly admitted to the Acute Medical Unit of University Hospital Southampton.
For several days thereafter I was able to observe the most ethnically diverse group of people I have ever come across; reflecting no doubt the diversity of the city itself. The hospital employs 12,000 staff and I watched doctors, surgeons, nurses, assistants, cleaners, caterers, and porters of every race and from every continent on Earth.
Multi-ethnic then, but not multi-cultural: No, they each and every one seemed bound in a common culture of good natured compassion, treating each other and their patients, some stressed and difficult, all with unfailing kindness and respect.
A hospital cure as well for the body as the soul.
