A CLIMATE crisis charity has appointed a new chair of trustees who says the transition to net-zero is non-negotiable.
Alex Clayton has taken on the role of chair for Winchester Action on the Climate Crisis (WinACC).
The new leader has a background in geography as a glaciologist and teacher and has shared his vision for the charity within the next few years.
Alex said: "I care deeply about the impact the climate crisis will have on Winchester. It will be complex, inescapable and intersectional. WinACC is well placed to help the community prepare and adapt to these impacts.
“My aim is to build on the existing welcoming charity and give purpose to every member of the community to shape our future. As our society transitions to net-zero, change will not be optional.

“The area is a predominantly rural district, with incredible green spaces. We need to use them more effectively to provide nature-based solutions and support biodiversity. There will be opportunities for landowners to profit from these changes and I want to work with the communities who know these areas best.
“Winchester has a talented population, ready to lead the way on our transition to net-zero. Sustainability is a growth sector for businesses and we want to support them.
“We want our city and towns to attract new investment and become a dynamic area with opportunities for all areas of society. We will continue to push our elected leaders to make bold and necessary choices and will support them when they do.
“Many of our residents find the changes we have ahead dislocating and threatening to the culture of our district but change is necessary and unavoidable.

“Implemented appropriately though it can draw our communities together, support the most vulnerable in our society and help us to celebrate aspects that we value the most.
“Young people need to see our district reacting to the climate crisis with an urgency that reflects their level of anxiety. This can overlap with core issues like their ability to move around our city and district.
“I urge anyone who wants to become a force for change, those who feel anxious about the climate, or those who want to leave the world a better place to get in touch with us at WinACC. We can have an open conversation about how we can build a vibrant, thriving, healthy district that treads lightly on the planet.”
WinACC, formed in 2007, is working towards making the area net-zero by 2030. The charity is predominantly led by volunteers with a like minded interest in the environment alongside five core staff members.
