A WINCHESTER war hero who swapped the battlefield for the frontline of social care has been named UK care assistant of the year.
Carl Yee-Lim, who works for Bluebird Care Winchester, Eastleigh and Romsey, won the prestigious accolade after being chosen from thousands of care workers from across the country.
After sustaining series injuries as a gunner for the British Army in Iraq, the Winchester resident began working for the home and live-in care provider in 2014.
Carl, 39, is described by his colleagues as “the epitome of compassion” and has broken down the barriers of men working in care, with men making up just 16 per cent of the social care workforce.

Bluebird’s care assistant of the year said: “Our customers mean the absolute world to me, and it is a pleasure to support my local community in their own homes.
“I was injured myself during my time in the military, so I fully appreciate how crucial flexible and kind care is for those who need it. Not only do I hope that this wonderful award underscores my commitment to serving those in need, but I also hope it encourages others to do the same.”
The judging panel of sector experts were impressed by Mr Yee-Lim’s talents. Particularly, the dedicated palliative care he provided to Tommy, a clinically vulnerable teenager.

Tommy’s mother, Sharon Scutt, said: “Carl commits his life to delivering outstanding care to others. Tommy saw him as a dear friend and looked up to him like a brother, and he will always have a special place in our hearts. We know Tommy is smiling about this too.”
Awards judge and CEO of the Homecare Association, Jane Townson, said: “Carl absolutely epitomises what it means to care, with his selflessness and willingness to go above and beyond. More than that, he is improving the lives of others, breaking down barriers and championing change in social care. This award is more than well deserved.”
Bluebird Care Winchester, Eastleigh and Romsey is a local home and live-in care provider rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.
