I WAS pleased to be invited to the opening of the new Nightingale Lodge in Romsey, last week.

This attractive modern development, with a mixture of apartments for rent or purchase, for elderly residents provides for independent living with a measure of care on hand if needed, as well as a community of friends and neighbours.

I know Hampshire County Council came in for criticism when we decided to replace the existing Nightingale Lodge but it was 60 years out of date.

I continue to urge the Government to facilitate more of these Extra-Care developments, where Hampshire is leading the way.   They are a way of sustaining independent living for elderly people and at the same time release under-occupied family homes for young families. I see it as a Win, Win.
