A GROWING group are lacing up their trainers ready for the fourth year of their annual challenge. And they’d like you to join them.

The Tinathon challenge was initiated in 2019 as a tribute to Tina Jury, a popular local marathon runner who lost her life to cancer.

Tina clocked up more than 100 marathons and still continued to train even during chemotherapy treatment.

So far the challenge has raised more than £30,000 in four years for Wessex Cancer Trust and Winchester Hospice.

Participants commit to doing 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise every day in December. This could be anything from running or power walking to a gym session or home workout. That’s every day, including Christmas Day.

The challenge is organised by Winchester PR consultant Miranda Rocksmith and personal trainer Heather Terry.

They are being supported by several local gyms and PTs who are providing free classes for Tinathoners. They will also be easy to spot thanks to some bright-coloured buffs provided by Alexandra Sports in Oliver's Battery.

Miranda said: “Our Tinathoners love the boost to their fitness and mental health from taking 30 minutes out to exercise every day through the Christmas chaos. We are so proud to be finishing another year strong in memory of our special friend who was such an advocate for everyone finding joy in exercise.”

To join the challenge, participants donate £31 via one of the Tinathon JustGiving pages (under 16s can enter for £15.50). If any days are missed, participants have to pay a £5 ‘fine’. More information can be found on the @Tinathon22 page on Instagram or in the @Tinathon22 Facebook group.
