A CARE home "character" is turning 100 and staff are asking for people to send in their cards to show her how incredible she is.

Laura Sheldrake, companionship team leader at Colten Care’s St Catherines View, has called out to the public to help give as many birthday cards as possible to a much-loved resident who is soon to reach 100.

The care home worker put out a plea on Facebook in hope of giving resident Jo Gough the birthday she deserves.

Laura posted in the Facebook group Winchester Rants: “I know this is short notice but hoping people could help me once again. We have an amazing lady turning 100 very soon and would love to get as many cards as possible for her. If anyone could help she LOVES the colour turquoise, the garden and music.

“I would love to get some from different countries as she has travelled well in the past so please share around.”

99-year-old Jo has been living at the dementia care home in Stanmore for three years and kept her spirits throughout the Covid restrictions despite being limited in seeing her five children.

The companionship team leader said: “Jo is a huge character in our home and is loved by staff and residents so to treat her on her milestone birthday would mean so much to her.

“She loves reading and getting cards would mean she can sit and read at her own pace and will enjoy the messages of congratulations from strangers. Receiving these cards would mean the world to her, her family and the staff at St Catherines View to show her how much she deserves this attention.

“Jo is a loveable person who is always trying to help anyone who needs it, the last few years have been tough but Jo was still a shining star. She may not be as active as she was pre-pandemic but she certainly tries to be as active as she can. We all just want to show her how special she is.”

Cards should be sent to Mrs Jo, St Catherines View Care Home, Stanmore Lane, Winchester, SO22 4BL by Thursday, December 1.

All cards will remain in the care home’s ‘post box’ ready for the big day. Staff and residents will be celebrating Jo’s 100th birthday with a British tea party and turn her into a queen for the day.

St Catherines View is unable to reveal the actual birthday date due to General Data Protection Regulations.
