IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Winchester, now that the tree is up following a delay due to works by Southern Water.
The Christmas tree in Winchester High Street went up at around 6am this morning (Sunday, November 13). Initially, the iconic 38ft tall tree was planned to go up at a similar time on Monday, November 7 but was pushed back due to ongoing works by Southern Water.
The utility company launched a major investigation after heavy rainfall caused sewage to come up from the drains around the High Street. Southern Water found a large amount of fat blocking up the pipes.

But now that work has been completed, Winchester Business Improvement District (BID) is happy to see the tree up in time for the Christmas lights switch on, on Thursday, November 17. The festive event will take place from 4pm in The Broadway.
Photos from Winchester BID show the tree being installed by the Buttercross monument.
The tree came from Woods Farm, in Solihull, and was installed by them, Winchester City Council's Special Maintenance team and workers from Icthus who supply and install the city's festive lights.
