DOZENS of people queued up today to get their hands on free food at Winchester's newest takeaway.

Students and nearby residents lined the pavement of Stockbridge Road as they waited patiently to sample Burpin Ron's - a burger joint named after a Winchester 'legend'.

The restaurant officially opened at 11am and was quickly inundated by people in search of a free promotional patty.

Paddy Dunne, an 18-year-old student at Peter Symonds College, was forced to sit tight for his burger and fries but was delighted when he finally made it to the front.

He said: "I've been here for about an hour and a half. It has been a long one, that's for sure, but it's all worth it for the free food!"

Michael, 16, also from Peter Symonds College, had only just joined the line when he spoke to the Chronicle. He said: "We heard about the place through mates and then saw it on Instagram.

"We are hoping to get some free food, especially after Tesco's meal deal has gone up in price. The queue is looking really long so might have to skip a college lesson."

Thomas, 16, from Basingstoke, said: "I heard about the place through my mates at Peter Symonds College.

"Can't go wrong with free food."

Owner Nordine Zaa was due to open the takeaway in August but faced delays due to several snagging issues.

It has created a total of 14 jobs in the city and also offers shakes, desserts, and drinks.

The hotly-anticipated eatery is named after the late Winchester character Ron Purse, who was known for burping in people's faces and pushing his decorated pram around during Christmas and the annual Hat Fair.

Nordine, 36, grew up in Winchester and has fond memories of Mr Purse. He described the opening day as "overwhelming".

He said: "I wasn't expecting this much support, we are very, very appreciative. It's a chance for us to show what we have to offer and we're delighted with the turnout."

Nordine estimated the restaurant had given away more than 100 burgers alongside portions of fries and shakes. "It was crazy," he added.

Burpin Ron's is now open 11am to 10pm from Sunday through Thursday and 11am to 11pm Friday and Saturday.
