A WATER company has installed an overground water pipe on Little Minster Street following two floods in six months.

Southern Water is currently undertaking a "major" investigation after raw sewage and other waste burst through several drains following heavy rain on Tuesday.

Hampshire Chronicle:

It created a stench and people had to walk carefully to avoid stepping in human excrement.

The overground pipe will prevent further flooding and also allow it to discover what is going wrong. Initial inquiries have revealed several blockages.

A spokesman from Southern Water said: "We’d like to apologise to residents, businesses and shoppers using the High Street and Little Minster Street, Winchester. Following floods we’re undertaking a major investigation of the sewer in the area. Initial findings show potentially serious blockages.

Hampshire Chronicle:

"With heavy rain expected, we’re installing an overground pipe to prevent another flood causing damage to property and the environment. It will also allow us to continue investigations with CCTV cameras.

Hampshire Chronicle:

"This will mean Little Minster Street will be closed to the junction with St Clement Street. We know this will affect businesses and our customer team is getting in touch."
