WORK is set to restart on a Winchester housing development that ground to a halt over the summer.

Several of the nine homes under construction next to Stanmore Primary School have been vandalised with windows smashed and others have windows and doors boarded up.

But work is set to resume next week says the main contractor at the site, off Stanmore Lane.

Prem Khinda, of Extreme Construction, said there had been an issue with the supply of electricity which had caused the delay.

Mr Khinda said the development has not been abandoned: "We have been waiting for the electrical connection and it has taken a long time to get it done. The site will be up and running from next week. It is all under control."

He said the houses, which will be for sale, were 95 per cent completed on the outside with only the interior fitting out to be done. Mr Khinda said his aim was to have them on the market within three to four months, early in the New Year.

Local planning consultant and former city councillor Ian Tait said: "I know this site very well and it's desperately sad to see what’s happened here. The developer needs to sort things out and finish off these much-needed homes."

The redevelopment, next to the currently upgraded electricity sub-station, will see five detached houses, including one four-bedroom, two three-beds and two two-beds, and four two-bedroom flats.

The access from Stanmore Lane will be resurfaced with a passing bay.
