CIVIC CHIEFS have issued an urgent appeal for new hosts in Winchester as Ukrainian families are facing homelessness.
The city has welcomed nearly 200 families since the war in Ukraine started.
However, many of the initial six-month host agreements are now coming to an end, leaving those unable to find private or council accommodation in a perilous position.
The city council is in the process of rematching guests with other families - but it has admitted it needs more people to step forward to meet demand.

Councillor John Tippett-Cooper said: “Almost 200 Ukrainian families have now settled into our District through the Homes for Ukraine Scheme after fleeing the violence inflicted on their country by Putin’s invasion.
"These families are enriching our communities and many are beginning to build successful and independent lives in the District. A number have moved from their host families into private rental accommodation having secured employment for example.
"However, some hosts - be it due to the cost of living or other pressures - are finding it difficult to continue supporting their guest families. As such, Winchester City Council is calling for more households in the District to step forward as hosts for families to be 'rematched' with."
In lieu of rising financial pressures, Hampshire County Council recently announced a £200 monthly 'top-up payment', meaning rematching hosts will receive £550 per month for the next six months under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
Cllr Tippett-Cooper said: "In addition, Winchester City Council has a team of dedicated housing staff to assist hosts with every aspect of the hosting arrangement.
"There is also support from the hosting community, with well-established social media groups in the District providing daily practical advice on all sorts of issues.
"Finally, fantastic local groups like the Winchester City of Sanctuary, the CAB, Churches Together, and SWVG are providing all sorts of vital community-based help, including social meet-ups, language support, and practical advice.
"If people would like to know more about becoming rematching hosts, please email ukraine@winchester.gov.uk and our team will get back to you as quickly as possible.”
