A ROAD has re-opened following a serious crash that had closed a major junction near Winchester.
The crash happened at the Cart and Horses junction near Kings Worthy, the junction of the A33 Basingstoke Road and the B3047. The junction has a poor safety record.
It caused severe congestion on the nearby A34 between the M3 and A33, tailing back toward Junction 9 of the M3 at Winnall. Tailbacks were also long on the A33 and the B3047 after the police closed the accident scene.
An air ambulance was at the scene with at least one road ambulance. It is unclear how many people are injured or how seriously.
The local congestion was worsened because of the unrelated closure of Springvale Road in Kings Worthy.
Last week there was a crash involving two vehicles at the junction which injured one person.
A police spokesman said: "We were called at 5.06pm on Tuesday October 18 to a report of a collision involving two vehicles on the A33 in Kings Worthy. One person reported minor injuries. The road had been cleared shortly before 6.30pm."
Local residents have long campaigned for safety improvements at the junction such as traffic lights or a roundabout.
