PRIMARY school children have been invited to write a poem about poems for a competition supported by a wildlife charity.

Winchester College is launching a poetry competition for partner primary schools in conjunction with local wildlife charity the Cameron Bespolka Trust.

The partner trust was set up in memory of a former Winchester College student to connect young people with nature.

Hampshire Chronicle:

The competition follows National Poetry Day on October 6 which celebrated the environment. Children from eligible schools have been invited to write their own poems about birds to be judged by ornithologist Roger Morgan-Grenville before he presents the prizes at an afternoon tea.

All competition entrants and their parents and carers can attend the celebratory event in College Hall on Wednesday, November 2. The winner will receive a trip to the New Forest nature retreat Cameron’s Cottage. Runner-up prizes include a class trip to Brownsea Island, a wildlife haven in Poole Harbour.

On the same day, Roger will lead the annual Cameron Bespolka Memorial Wildlife Talk on 'Beavers and Buzzards; nature adventures on a very long walk’. The bird expert supports the restoration of British biodiversity, successfully retraced Shackleton's journey across South Georgia for the first time, and is the charity founder for Curlew Action.

The annual talk is in memory of Cameron Bespolka, a former pupil of Winchester College who was a passionate naturalist and died at a young age.

Hampshire Chronicle:

All primary school pupils in years four, five and can attend the talk. Schools should contact the director of community service, Clare Talks, for more information at clt@wincoll.ac.uk.
