FANS of cheap pints and pub grub will be disappointed as chain Wetherspoon has confirmed it is not looking at bringing its business to a former bank in Romsey.

Rumours began to circulate when it was announced that Barclays Bank would be closing its branch in The Old Corn Exchange in Romsey.

A national programme of branch closures will see 140 branches disappear in 2022 - with Romsey set to lose its branch on December 8.

Barclays sent a letter out to inform its customers last month - and people began to ruminate over who or what could take over the building.

Many posted online, with some seemingly certain that Wetherspoon would want to snap up the unit and break into the town.

However, those hopes have now been dashed, as a spokesman has confirmed to the Romsey Advertiser that this will definitely not be happening.

He said: "I have checked this out and sorry, it is not Wetherspoon."

Now Romsey residents are left to wonder what will be happening to the historic building.

One posted on Facebook group Romsey News and Information: "That's going to be a very grand estate agents, or hairdressers... or charity shop, or dare I say another restaurant/coffee shop..."
