Distant sounds of Michael Bublé and the faint smell of mince pies crept into the city's air as preparations for Winchester Cathedral's famous Christmas Market ramped up.

On Wednesday, October 12 workmen started piecing together some of the many chalets which will soon be filled by traders selling all manner of treats and trinkets.

Crews from HazCos Enterprises - a long-term partner of the market - marked out plots and moved in some of the materials to the Inner Close ahead of the build.

Recognised as one of the best in Europe, the market will be open for business on Friday, November 18, and will run all the way until Thursday, December 22.

As previously revealed, the market will be returning without the popular ice rink.

Last year, the cathedral replaced the ice rink with a performance stage for buskers and local groups.

That will be coming back along with the lantern parade which will form part of the market's opening ceremony.

Around 118 German-inspired chalets will line the ancient cathedral walls, with pop-ups selling a range of seasonal gifts, food, and drink.

The proposed site will be similar to last year, which saw the introduction of a larger food court and a community stage that hosted a variety of free performances throughout.

Founded in 2006, the Christmas Market celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2016. The city's festive celebrations attract thousands of people each year from far and wide.
