CONCERNS have been raised after canisters of a drug which can render people unconcious were found discarded around Swanmore.

Officers say a number of small empty nitrous oxide (NOS) cartridges have been discovered by litter pickers in spots where groups of young people typically gather around the village.

NOS, which is otherwise known as laughing gas, balloons, hippy crack or chargers, comes in a small pressurised metal canister and is inhaled to create euphoria and hallucinations.

It is often used in medical practice as an anaesthetic and pain relief, or as an approved food additive when used as a propellant for whipped cream.

However, it has long been used recreationally in the UK due to it being widely available and cheap - despite a move to restrict access in 2016.

The gas has been known to cause oxygen deprivation and a risk of asphyxiation, as well as short-term mental, audiovisual and motor impairments that could result in the user being injured due to reduced co-ordination.

The discovery has led officers to issue a warning to youngsters reminding them of the dangers NOS poses to their health.

Posting on the Winchester Police Facebook page, PCSO Sarah McCulloch said: "I was recently made aware of discarded NOS (Nitrous Oxide) canisters in an area of Swanmore where young people have recently been meeting up.

"The local litter pickers have done a fabulous job of cleaning up, but on patrol last night I came across a few more that have recently been discarded.

"When the gas is inhaled it can initially make you feel happy or giddy, but inhaling this gas could lead to unconsciousness.

"Regular use of NOS can have an impact on the quality of your life."

The post sparked a flurry of comments from Winchester residents who said the canisters could be found 'everywhere' around the city.

Current law states it is illegal to sell nitrous oxide to anyone under the age of 18, or to supply it for human consumption. However, it is not illegal to possess it.

PCSO McCulloch added that residents with concerns about someone they know who may be regularly using NOS canisters should access Talk to Frank and Drug Wise for further information.
