FIREFIGHTERS swapped their hoses for trowels as they pitched in to help build an outdoor classroom for primary school children.

Crews and support staff from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service teamed up with volunteers and staff from Morgan Sindall Construction on Friday, September 30 for the project.

Teachers and students at Bishop's Waltham Primary School will now be able to enjoy the outdoor space - subject to the Great British weather, that is.

The service also confirmed work on building Bishop's Waltham's new fire station is now well underway.

The demolition of the old station was completed earlier this year.

Work is expected to continue over the coming months with a view to the station being ready for handover early in 2023.

Bishop’s Waltham’s fire engine has been moved into a temporary facility nearby so the crew can remain fully operational.

Arron Hedges, head of properties and facilities at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, formerly said: “Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is committed to providing stations with modern facilities for our colleagues and the communities that we are proud to serve.

“Our plans for Bishop’s Waltham are part of our wider station investment programme, with further proposals for new fire stations progressing in Cosham and Redbridge.”
