ART design by schoolchildren is set to be installed in a 'disgusting' subway near Romsey Railway Station, subject to planning approval.

The designs, by 96 pupils at Romsey School, are mosaic panels which included images of animals, buildings and the sea.

On the planning statement, it said: “A 15-panel mosaic frieze is to be installed along the wall within the internal subway of the station and two mosaic murals installed on the ceiling archways within the subway. The design has been informed and inspired by drawings made by 96 pupils at Romsey School.

“The works will not only conserve and enhance Romsey station, but also help to develop a relationship between the local school, community and the station creating a wider sense of community pride and ownership, positively influencing student behaviour at the station.”

Romsey Town Council's planning committee was delighted with the plan and praised it for the positive impact it would have on the subway.

The committee's chairman Cllr Sally Lamb said: “It's great that the school students have done this. It's lovely. The students will be proud.”

Cllr John Critchley said: “Anything that will enhance the disgusting subway is good.”

A comment on Test Valley Borough Council's planning website from the environment team raised concerns about the longevity of the work.

It said: “There is no objection in principle to the proposed installation of artwork in the railway station. However, some additional information is needed. How long is the artwork proposed to be in situ? Is there a scheme of maintenance and cleaning in place associated with it? There is concern that the art could become dirty or damaged, and then would be unsightly in the future.”
