THE Hares of Hampshire from the summer's public art trail have been sold off to there forever homes for thousands of pounds each.

On Tuesday, September 27 the Hares of Hampshire went under the hammer in a finale auction raising money for the Murray Parish Trust to fund new equipment for children’s emergency care at Southampton Hospital.

After ten weeks of being on display around Winchester and Southampton and a two week delay due to the country being in mourning, the hares said their final farewell over the weekend.

More than 70 vibrantly designed hares and leverets were gathered together outside the Great Hall in Winchester from Friday, September 23 to Sunday, September 25 before the grand auction conducted by TV personality and renowned auctioneer Charles Hanson.

Visitors were welcomed to watch the auction and bid for a hare of their own inside the Great Hall or online from 6.30pm. All 31 of the larger hare sculptures, designed by artists, and four of the smaller leverets went up for sale. Top sellers included ‘The Wishing Hare’ a mosaic of mirrors design created by Sophy Handy and the LEPUS Roman Hare as designed by Emma Abel which both sold for £8500.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Organisers are busy still totting up the results but have revealed approximately £180,000 was raised from bidders alone. Head of operations, Sam Robson said: “We’ve now got the morning after the night before chaos with moving all the hares and getting them to their homes but it was a great event.”
