Winchester based Lighting Design consultancy JPLD have won a major lighting design award at the Creative Retail Awards held in London recently.
JPLD, who are based in Staple Gardens, were approached by their long-term client Dufry/World Duty Free Group to design the lighting scheme for new Manchester International Airport T2 Walk Through Duty Free and Associated Retail.
Creative director James Poore said: "Flowing throughout the fabric of the city, Manchester’s energy and creative expression can be felt 24 hours a day and this formed the inspiration the entire store concept. Sense of place is an often-overused term, but it is a critical element in any design especially when the space becomes an important gateway to the city in which it dwells.
"One of the key features was the way digital technology was integrated, enabling us to communicate multiple messages to customers as they pass nearby. The A series of ‘digital echoes’ were strategically placed in keys areas, and these are able to communicate messages at certain points in the customer journey. These ‘echoes’ are carried through into elements of the lighting to emphasise the message as well as bringing cohesion between the digital and lighting elements.

"We utilised technology usually used for large display screens and used the converted media/video signal as a DMX feed which we then used to control bespoke luminaires arrange in abstract arrangements which not only created a light show/lighting effect which related to the media source but could also display pixelated video of the original media input As a retail interior space it is cutting edge and pushes the boundaries of what has been attempted before and signals the new era in experiential retail where the space and environment become as important, if not more so than the products sold and the store becomes an aspirational destination."
