A COUPLE celebrating 65 years of married life in Romsey received Her Royal Majesty’s ‘best wishes’ less than a week before she passed away.
Garry Owen and Mary Jean Webb featured in the Romsey Advertiser on the day of their 65th wedding anniversary on Friday, September 2.
The couple received many cards from family, friends and Romsey Advertiser readers as well as a special card from Queen Elizabeth II.
The card signed ‘Elizabeth II’ and addressed to Mr and Mrs Webb read: “It gives me great pleasure to send my best wishes to you for your sixty-fifth wedding anniversary on 2nd September, 2022. I hope your day will be filled with happy memories.”

Following the Queen’s death on Thursday, September 8 Garry, 88, said: “We received a lovely card from The Queen, sadly one of the last which she will have sent.”
In 1953, Garry had just finished royal military police training in Woking when his squad was selected for duties for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in London. Looking back on the time, the retired butcher said: “I felt truly honoured to be helping.”
The Queen’s coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953. Queen Elizabeth II achieved 70 years on the throne, with her Platinum Jubilee being celebrated internationally.
