WINCHESTER College has shared a photo of the Queen’s visit to the school in 1955 to commemorate her death.

The independent boarding school expressed its condolences following the announcement of the Queen’s passing by Buckingham Palace on Thursday evening, September 8.

Winchester College have since updated its website to have a black background in mourning of Queen Elizabeth II, with a banner stating: “We pay tribute to Her Majesty on an exceptional life of service. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the royal family on their loss.”

Sir Richard Stagg, warden of the college, said: “All those in the Winchester College community are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen. In the past we have celebrated milestones in her reign but today, and in the coming days, pupils, parents and staff will reflect and pay tribute to her exceptional life, and her lifelong service to the people of her country and the Commonwealth.

“Our condolences and heartfelt sympathy go out to her family.”

The Queen and her husband, the late Duke of Edinburgh, visited the school in 1955 and presented ‘The Queen’s Medals’ to three Winchester College prefects. Her Majesty won over the crowd of school pupils when she suggested that six days be added to their school holiday.
