The city council refused retrospective planning permission for window graphics on a Winchester shoe shop.

The application was refused by Winchester City Council planning officers for the graphics outside Shuropody.

In the officer's report, they said that the graphics were out of keeping with the character of the area. 

The report said: "In this application, the sign boards are considered to adversely clutter the first floor level of the building with words and logos, while obstructing the three sash windows to a historic building.

"The building has been converted from previous retail space that had an existing painted fascia board, and this has been updated with Shuropody's name with other text and telephone number. Although the building is not listed, the exterior of the building demonstrates traditional period features.

"The retrospective advert proposal obscures the existing first floor six-over-six timber sash windows with Foamex board adverts, and its appearance is considered incongruous to the surrounds and detracts by covering over architectural features of the building. The proposal fails to preserve or enhance the character of the area."

The City of Winchester Trust sent in an objection to the applicatiion. It said: "The Trust objects very strongly to this crude display which is wholly against the council policy for central Winchester."
