WORK has started in giving one of Winchester''s most iconic landmarks a clean and wax.
On Monday, scaffolding was put up around the King Alfred statue in The Broadway, in preparation for it to be cleaned.
In a tweet, Winchester City Council said: "Scaffolding has appeared around Hamo Thornycroft's iconic statue in The Broadway. Bronze Restorations, a specialist contractor, will be cleaning and rewaxing the popular tribute to King Alfred the Great over the next theee weeks. And a deep clean of the stone plinth is also underway."

This last took place back in 2015 when Winchester City Council spent £4,425 on the project to give the statue a scrub and polish with a new layer of protective wax.
The rewax will give the statue a reddish appearance until it gradually wears off.
