THE Winchester Association of National Trust Members recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a summer party at Mottisfont, two years late due to the pandemic.

Many members and friends attended the celebration along with senior staff from the National Trust head office as well as other local properties. Letters and cards of congratulation were received from many properties and also from the National Trust director general, Hilary McGrady.

Soon after the association was founded it raised funds to create a Rose Garden at Mottisfont.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Dr. Eric Caldwell, one of its founding members and chairman for many years, told those present how he and a small team had raised over £12,000 in today’s money from all over the world to create a garden of roses which were common in Victorian times. The original memorial book of the gifts was on show in its special display case. The 50th anniversary of the Rose Garden opening will be in 2024.

Since it was formed, the association has raised over £500,000 by providing a wide range of social activities including talks, day outings and short holidays which have been enjoyed by its members over the years. This money has been used to fund specific National Trust conservation and development projects mainly at local properties – Winchester City Mill, Mottisfont, Hinton Ampner and The Vyne.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Chairman Margot Mouat said: “We are very proud of the role our Association has played over the years in supporting the National Trust. We are getting back to ‘business as usual’ and look forward to providing activities for the benefit of our members and the National Trust.”
