TWO lucky students will have their studies paid for after receiving generous scholarships from a charitable organisation.

Winchester Rotary has two Georgia Scholars this year - Nancy Meldrum and Rob O'Connor, who both live in Winchester and attend Peter Symonds College, will receive a scholarship from the organisation.

Nancy will be studying for an academic year at Georgia Gwinnett College and has chosen intermediate French, beginners' Spanish and art appreciation.

Rob will be based at the University of Georgia studying philosophy, African history and theatre studies.

As the national winner of the Rotary Young Filmmaker Award, he is hoping to make a video diary of his time in Georgia.

The Georgia Rotary Student Programme (GRSP) set up by Rotary clubs in the state of Georgia USA, allows students from all over the world to take up an ambassadorial scholarship, providing they meet certain criteria, and are recommended by a Rotary club in their home country.

They live in student accommodation on campus but are hosted by local Rotary families.

On June 29, Nancy and Rob met the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Derek Green, at Abbey House. The visit to the mayor has become something of a tradition, and they were accompanied by Winchester Rotary president Deborah Macartney.

The meeting was arranged by rotarian Steve Feeney, who coordinates applications from the Winchester area.

Steve said: “GRSP is a wonderful opportunity for students, if readers know of anyone who meets the criteria and who might be interested, please ask them to email grsp@winchester-rotary.org for full details.”
