FIVE charities based in Hampshire have each received a £1,000 donation from the Movement for Good Awards.

The awards, launched by Benefact Group, saw thousands of people across the UK nominate a cause close to their hearts to be in with a chance of winning a share of £1m.

Dreams Come True Charity, Forgotten Veterans UK, 1st Chandlers Ford Scout Group, Invest In Me Research and Karis Kids will all benefit from the money, following the significant public support in Hampshire.

Karis Kids, which is based in Winchester, helps to get kids out of poverty in the slums of Kampala, Uganda.

William Law, from the charity, said: “Winning this award is a joy to us! We’re a small charity doing important work without the resources of a large organisation. It's an honour for our charity to win, but the real difference is always felt most by the kids in Uganda. We’re committed to helping them win.

“100 per cent of money donated goes to the cause: getting families get out of poverty. That’s quite rare for most charities. Our 100 per cent model helps show our supporter their money is where it matters.”

The charity plan to use the money to buy gravity water filters for 69 of their link families. These will remove dirt, bacteria, and certain contaminates in the water, helping to provide reliably clean water for the families.

This is the fourth year, the Benefact Group has donated £1m through the Movement for Good Awards. The independent, specialist financial service aims to give all its available profits to charity.

More than 100,000 people around the UK voted nationally for 7,250 UK charities, not for profit organisations and community projects, with the 250 winning charities picked at random from those nominated.

Mark Hews, group chief executive of Benefact Group, said: “We would like to thank every single person who took the time to nominate a good cause. Benefact Group is the fourth largest corporate donor in the UK and has an ambition to be the biggest.

"Owned by a charity, all of its available profits go to good causes, and the more the group grows, the more the group can give. As a company whose purpose is to contribute to the greater good of society, charitable giving is at the heart of what we do. We know that £1,000 can make a huge difference to the incredible work that charities do and we’re looking forward to seeing how this financial boost will change lives for the better.”

A further 250 winning charities will be selected in September and 120 in December. For more go to movementforgood.com.
