I SPENT a very enjoyable evening watching This Royal Throne at the Theatre Royal Winchester on June 5. It was a 75-minute romp from the thrones of the UK, from Richard II to Elizabeth II, with writings from Jane Austen, William Makepeace Thackeray, Horace Walpole and William Shakespeare, to celebrate 70 glorious years of Her Majesty the Queen. Winchester favourite John Miller wrote and directed it, and he and Michael Pennington and Pamela Cole were in it, standing in for Sian Phillips, who was unable to attend for personal reasons.

The sad fact was it was only about a fifth full. There was no flyer, so unless you read the brochure or looked at the theatre website, you wouldn't have known it was on. It also came at the end of a long weekend of celebration, and having spent the whole four days at home, it appears not many people wanted to go out on Sunday evening. Plus a lot of street parties were still in full swing at 7.30pm, so no-one wanted to leave those.

But I just wanted to tell all those who weren't there that they missed a cracking show. All the hard work John put into writing and directing it, Michael and Pamela for coming out on a Sunday, and the Theatre Royal for putting on a sensational show were not in vain. A big thank you for everyone involved. I hope John might be persuaded to publish the script, so everyone can relive our magnificent history.
