TWO large slabs have appeared and been fenced off on Winchester High Street near the Buttercross and The Westgate.
The purpose of the slab was unclear: a plinth for a statue? The base of a new anti-terrorist plant holder as in other places on the High Street? Covering for roadworks? A piece of modern art?
The Chronicle has asked Winchester City Council if it can clarify the position and was told: "Our Estates team has advised that they are not aware of any construction on the high street that involves WCC."
Hampshire County Council, as highways authority, has also been approached.
It has been suggested on social media that the plinths may be connected with the forthcoming Hat Fair or the Hares of Hampshire public art trial across Winchester and Southampton this summer, put on by the Murray Parish Trust and Wild In Art.
