A WINCHESTER building has been included in regional awards from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
The winners of the RICS Awards in the South East have been revealed and Burrell House is on the list.
The winning projects, which include a café and residential centre, were judged across five categories, community benefit, public sector, refurbishment/revitalisation, residential, and heritage.
The restoration project, overseen by Ridge and Partners, saw the refurbishment of Burrell House as the home for the new Winchester Hospice.
The heritage building was restored, enhanced and given a new purpose, saving it from near certain demolition. There was no dedicated end-of-life accommodation in Winchester before this project completed; Burrell House provides a well-equipped and pleasant local facility for end-of-life patients and their loved ones, combining stringent clinical standards with the warm and welcoming look and feel of boutique hospitality.

RICS judges said: “Burrell House, Winchester was a semi-derelict Victorian building at risk of demolition but the refurbishment option was energetically explored and successfully executed. To be suitable for its new use as a hospice for palliative care, the project demanded strong coordination of different skillsets, including specialist advice on clinical requirements. The refurbishment included new energy and heating systems, plus incorporation of an award winning garden from Chelsea Flower Show. Both the building and a yew tree were saved. The project has delivered a fully functional and efficient hospice for the community, despite the constraints of the building.”
The RICS Awards showcase initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. They recognise outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies.
The regional winners have now been shortlisted in the national awards, taking place in October, and will compete at the national RICS Awards Grand Final.
Henry Russell OBE FRICS, Chair of the judging panel, said: “These winning projects are a true testament to the hard work of property professionals in the South East. The pandemic has led to the industry facing much uncertainty and challenging conditions, but we were delighted, and very proud, to see such innovative building projects appearing across our cities, towns and countryside.
“The teams behind them have worked tirelessly and with incredible vision to create projects which provide tremendous benefit across a diverse range of areas. Through collaborating with other professionals, local surveyors have shown that they have the talent to deliver exemplary and, in many cases, world-class built projects.”
“The RICS is delighted to recognise skills and dedication that the teams behind these projects had in ensuring successful delivery and making a positive impact across the South East.”
