TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of one of the best-known faces in Winchester.
Margaret Cole, 92, was for 40 years the lollipop lady on Stanmore Lane, helping thousands of children on their way to and from school. She was also a dedicated supporter of the Royal British Legion.
In a Facebook post, the Friends of St Luke and St Marks said: "We are saddened to hear of the passing of Margaret Cole MBE aged 92. She was the lollipop lady for Stanmore School for many years.
"She worshipped at St Luke's. She was awarded her MBE for services to the local community. She was Standard Bearer of Winchester Branch of the Royal British Legion Women's Section for many years and a proud supporter of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
"A friend to many and will be sadly missed. Funeral Arrangements to follow."

Many people have paid tribute on social media.
Ruth Gibb posted: "So sad to hear this. Always smiling and the children loved her."
Victoria Stainer said: "Rest in peace Margaret you will be sadly missed by so many thank you for keeping all of us that attend Stanmore school safe everyday the best lollipop lady that we could wish for."
City MP Steve Brine posted: "Sorry to hear this. I met Margaret a few times in the course of my work. A lovely lady."
