Police have issued a warning to Winchester residents amid a rise in fuel thefts.
Officers patrolling Winchester’s rural areas have said thieves are targeting fuel canisters from garages, sheds and outhouses which are typically used to power machinery such as lawnmowers.
This comes as the squeeze on households tightens as rapidly rising food and fuel prices sent inflation to another 30-year high in March, even before energy bills spiked.
A spokesperson for Winchester Police said: “Unfortunately, we are seeing an increase in fuel thefts, with offenders mainly targeting fuel canisters from garages and sheds which can be used for machinery and lawn mowers.
“If you use fuel for any machinery, please check the locations where it is stored and make sure it’s secure or move if possible.
“If you require any security advice, please contact your local team at Winchester.rural.police@hampshire.police.uk and we will be happy to assist.”
